Life with the Cineva One

Friday night: a 100-inch picture on your wall, and no TV on it.

Movie night in bed, in the living room or out back, ready before the popcorn is.

A 100-inch movie picture on a living room wall at night, the Cineva One on the coffee table in front of the couch
The big picture, without the big TV

A 100-inch picture on a plain wall, and when it is off, the wall is just a wall. No black rectangle hanging over the bed, no wall mount, no holes to patch.

Movie night happens more often

It sets itself up in seconds, so a movie in bed on a Tuesday is as easy as one on the weekend. At 3.7 lb it goes to the bedroom, the living room or the backyard in one hand.

The question everyone asks

Can you watch it with the lights on?

Yes, with a lamp on. You do not need a pitch-black room. Here is what to expect, room by room.

A mom and two kids on blankets in the backyard at dusk, the sky still blue, watching a bright movie on a sheet hung on the fence, the Cineva One on a small table
  1. 01
A lamp on: an 80-inch picture

Keep a lamp on for the snacks and the kids, and bring the picture down to 80 inches with the digital zoom or by moving it closer. It stays bright and clear.

  2. 02
Lights off: 100 inches and up

In the bedroom or the living room with the main light off, 650 ANSI lumens fills a 100-inch wall, bright to the corners.

  3. 03
Outside: start at dusk, not midnight

In the backyard the movie starts once the sun is down, while the sky is still blue. What no projector this size beats is the afternoon sun through a window: close the drapes or wait for evening. If it is not bright enough for your room in 60 nights, send it back.

The picture

Native 1080p, with 4K and 8K supported. Sharp to the corners.

Most cheap projectors look great in the listing photos, then dim, gray and blurry at the edges on your wall. Here is what you see instead.

A couple on the sofa in the dark watching a sharp, bright mountain valley picture filling the wall, the Cineva One on the coffee table
Native 1080p, 4K and 8K supported

A true 1920 × 1080 chip, so text in the corners stays crisp and faces keep their detail at 100 inches. 4K and 8K movies and files play on it, shown in sharp native 1080p.

Brightness rated in ANSI lumens

The giant number on most cheap boxes is made up. This one is 650 ANSI lumens, the standard way projector brightness is rated, in the brightest of three modes.

Your apps

Netflix opens from the remote. No Fire Stick needed.

Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Disney+ come from the app store built into the projector, so movie night starts from the remote: no laptop, no cables, no "app not supported" message. Already have a Fire TV Stick, Roku or Chromecast? It plugs into the HDMI port, so every app and login from your TV comes with it. Or cast from your phone.

Sets itself up

Point it at the wall. It focuses and squares itself in 2 seconds.

Autofocus sharpens the picture and auto keystone squares the corners on its own, even with the projector off to one side. A shelf or a frame in the way? It moves the picture off it. Set it about 8.9 ft from the wall for a 100-inch picture, closer for a smaller one, or shrink it with the zoom without moving a thing.

The 360° stand

Movies on the ceiling, lying in bed.

The stand turns all the way around and tilts straight up, so the picture lands on the wall, the ceiling or anywhere in between. Lie back, point it up and watch from your pillow. It can sit right on the nightstand: you hear a soft fan in a silent room, and most people stop noticing it once the movie starts. The stand comes off if you want it flat on a shelf.

An installer's view

A home theater installer explains why he tells people to buy the Cineva One

Nineteen years putting screens and projectors in people's homes. He sees the cheap boxes every week.

A home theater installer in a client's living room with the Cineva One
Every week someone shows me a projector box that says 15,000 lumens and asks why the picture looks like a faded photo with a lamp on. That number is made up. The figure that matters is ANSI lumens, and those boxes never print it. Half of them are 720p chips sold as "4K supported", so the edges go soft, and Netflix says "not supported" the first night. The rest are people about to spend $450 or more on a Samsung Freestyle or an XGIMI, asking if they have to. The Cineva One gives you 650 ANSI lumens, a true 1080p picture and Netflix on the remote, and it focuses and squares itself in a couple of seconds. It tilts up to the ceiling and takes a streaming stick or a console in a normal HDMI port. That is why I tell people to buy it.

Bedroom

My wife vetoed a TV in our bedroom years ago. This sits next to my alarm clock, about a foot from my head, and fills the whole space over the dresser. Once a show is going I don't notice the fan. We got through a season in three weeks. I'm asleep halfway through most episodes and she turns it off.

Fourth of July

Clipped an old bedsheet to the fence, sat this on a cooler, and my kids dragged every pillow in the house outside. Started a little after sunset and could see it fine. Ran the sound to our little speaker so the neighbors didn't get the whole movie. They've asked for it every weekend since.

Good, wait for evening

Bought it to give my eyes a break from the 50-inch. Clear picture, and it covers the wall above the fireplace. Four stars because the sun hits that side of the house after lunch, so I pull the drapes or wait till evening. The pointer on the remote took me a week to stop overshooting.

Ceiling

My apartment is basically one room, so there was no spot left for a TV. I aim this up at the ceiling and watch flat on my back. Getting my phone connected took a minute the first time. A couple of episodes before sleep, every night. My neck is grateful.

Xbox

Plugged my Xbox in and played Forza on a picture as wide as my couch. I'm not a pro gamer, so I can't tell you numbers, but racing and Madden felt normal to me. Had friends over Saturday and nobody wanted to leave. Shut the blinds and it looked great.

Birthday present

Got this for my husband's birthday because he kept texting me links to projectors. The box sat on the kitchen table a whole day before he noticed it. He had a movie going upstairs in about five minutes without asking me once. Now he's talking about the basement.

Common questions

Still deciding if the Cineva One fits your room?

Native 1080p: a true 1920 × 1080 picture, so text and faces stay crisp at 100 inches. It plays 4K and 8K files and streams too, and shows them in 1080p. A lot of cheap boxes say "4K supported" on a 720p chip, which is why their pictures go soft at the edges.
